Bill Gates helped build the personal-computer era around the idea that technology would put new tools on almost every desk. His latest warning is about what happens when artificial intelligence removes the need for some of those desks altogether.

In a new essay on what he calls a turbulent AI era, Gates writes that many jobs will disappear permanently as AI moves into law, customer service, medicine, software and manufacturing. He expects the disruption to unfold over roughly a decade rather than across several generations.

The First Jobs at Risk Are Not Just Factory Jobs

Gates is not describing automation as a problem limited to warehouses or assembly lines. He specifically identifies both white-collar and blue-collar work and says entry-level and mid-level positions face the greatest risk.

That matters because those jobs are often the bridge between education and a long-term career. If the first rung disappears, the problem is not only that one position vanishes; it becomes harder for younger workers to gain the experience required for the jobs that remain.

He Thinks New Jobs Will Arrive - Just Not Enough of Them

Technology shifts have eliminated occupations before and created new ones in their place. Gates argues that AI could break that familiar pattern because the new roles may require years of specialized training while the old work disappears much faster.

His concern is not a temporary recession-style spike in unemployment. In the essay, he contrasts AI disruption with economic downturns that eventually reverse. A job automated away by a capable system may not come back when the economy improves.

Gates Is Also Talking About Who Pays When Work Disappears

The warning has already moved from technology commentary into tax policy. Fortune reported that Gates has called for changes to a tax system he believes can encourage companies to replace people with machines, including taxes tied to AI activity and robots.

That puts a concrete fiscal question behind the futuristic debate. If fewer people are earning wages and paying income taxes, governments still need revenue to fund services, training and whatever support workers need during the transition.

The Argument Is Happening Before the Jobs Are Gone

Other technology leaders are less pessimistic. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has argued that AI will eliminate tasks more often than entire jobs, an important counterpoint to Gates’s forecast.

But Gates’s warning is gaining attention because it does not depend on a distant science-fiction scenario. The sectors he names employ millions of people now, and AI systems are already being introduced into each of them. His question is no longer whether AI changes work. It is how much work remains recognizably human when the change is finished.
