Brooklyn Man Charged in Fatal Shooting of Baby
By Cameron Hale. Apr 6, 2026
Seven-month-old Kaori Patterson-Moore was fatally shot on April 1, 2026, while sitting in a stroller on a Brooklyn sidewalk, after a gunman opened fire from the back of a moving moped near the intersection of Humboldt and Moore streets in the Williamsburg neighborhood, according to the New York City Police Department. Kaori’s father rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her two-year-old brother, who was also nearby, was grazed by the gunfire and survived.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a press briefing that surveillance footage showed a suspect seated on the rear of a moped discharge at least two rounds toward a group gathered on the corner, striking the infant. Tisch described the killing as “a tragedy that truly shocks the conscience.” Authorities said Kaori was not the intended target of the shooting.
Suspect Arrested and Charged
Amuri Greene, 21, of Brooklyn, was taken into custody Thursday, April 2, after police identified him from surveillance video as the individual who fired the shots, according to the NYPD. Greene was hospitalized following the incident, as the moped he and the driver were traveling on crashed into an oncoming vehicle approximately two blocks from the shooting. He was arrested while under medical care and formally charged Friday.
The NYPD announced Greene faces three counts of murder - including intentional murder and murder of a child under 11 - as well as one count of attempted murder, five counts of criminal possession of a weapon, two counts of attempted criminal possession of a weapon, and two counts of assault, according to CBS New York. Greene pleaded not guilty to all charges at an arraignment Friday night and was ordered held without bail. A court complaint indicates Greene told police he was aiming at another person in the crowd at the time of the shooting.
Second Suspect Taken Into Custody
A second suspect, identified as Matthew Rodriguez, 18, was taken into custody Friday in Pennsylvania by NYPD detectives working with the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force, according to ABC News and the Associated Press. Police believe Rodriguez was driving the moped at the time of the shooting. Charges against Rodriguez were pending as of Friday evening, and he had not yet been extradited to New York City.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said investigators believe the shooting is connected to a gang dispute involving individuals associated with the Marcy Houses and a group known as M.O.E. from the Bushwick Houses, according to CBS New York. Law enforcement said it continues to investigate the full circumstances.
Victim and Family
Kaori Patterson-Moore’s mother, Lianna Charles-Moore, told the New York Post that she was pushing her daughter in the stroller when she initially mistook the sound of gunfire for fireworks. “My daughter was innocent. She didn’t deserve that,” she said, according to the Post. “We were just going outside to go get her a few things.” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called Kaori’s death “an unthinkable loss” and said the city could not accept such violence as normal.
Case Status
Greene remains in custody without bail. The case against Rodriguez is pending formal charges and extradition proceedings. The NYPD said the investigation is continuing and encouraged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers. No trial date has been set in the case against Greene as of the date of this report.
