FDA Approves First Heart Valve Designed to Grow With Children
By Morgan Blake. Oct 12, 2026
The FDA has approved the first heart valve designed to be expanded after surgery as a child grows, a change aimed at reducing the cycle of repeat open-heart operations some children with congenital heart disease face. The Autus Size-Adjustable Valve is approved for pediatric patients who need pulmonary-valve replacement.
Traditional replacement valves do not grow with a child, which can force another operation when the device becomes too small or wears out. The new valve can be enlarged later through a catheter-based procedure, turning growth itself from a reason for replacement into something the device was designed to accommodate.
The Device Changes the Usual Pediatric Valve Problem
Children can outgrow fixed-size valves even when the original surgery works. The Autus valve is built so doctors can expand its diameter later, potentially extending the time before another open-heart operation is needed.
It Also Uses a Different Material Inside the Valve
The FDA says the device is the first U.S.-approved heart valve to use polymeric leaflets rather than animal-derived tissue. That design is intended to address durability problems that can be especially important in younger patients.
The Approval Came With Real Clinical Data and Known Device Issues
The FDA based approval on a study involving 62 pediatric patients at 12 U.S. sites. At six months, the first 60 patients had acceptable blood-flow performance; the agency also reported several valve-frame fractures and reduced leaflet movement, none of which caused symptoms in those patients at the time reported.
The Breakthrough Is the Ability to Adapt After the First Surgery
The approval does not eliminate every future procedure or guarantee that a child will never need another operation. Its significance is more specific: physicians now have a U.S.-approved valve designed from the start to be expanded as the patient grows.
