Gladys Knight Is 82 and Says She Is Stepping Back From the Stage

Gladys Knight, 82, said this week that she is reducing her performance schedule. Her statement, issued on Instagram after videos circulated of a recent appearance, is the only first-person account on the record and it is worth quoting at length.

“After much soul searching I’ve decided that I will be easing into fewer performances while focusing on transitioning into the next stage of my career and life moving forward,” she wrote.

That is not a retirement, and she did not describe it as one. She remains open to performing.

What Prompted It

Footage from a recent show circulated widely, with viewers describing her as appearing disoriented on stage. A Billboard critic who reviewed her July appearance at the Hollywood Bowl alongside Smokey Robinson had already written that she “barely got through this show, and only by leaning heavily on her backup singers.”

Knight’s statement followed that coverage rather than preceding it.

What Her Husband Told TMZ

Her husband and manager, William McDowell, spoke to TMZ about the schedule. According to that report, he said Knight has not been diagnosed with dementia, and that they intend to see a doctor to evaluate whether she has it. TMZ also reported that he described a September 5 date in Florida as the deciding show, and said that if it goes poorly he will cancel dates booked through mid-November.

The same report quoted him saying: “No one is ever gonna make me say, ‘My wife is well,’ but all she wants to do is sing.”

Those remarks come from a single outlet and are reported here as that outlet’s account. No medical diagnosis has been announced by Knight, by her family or by any physician.

Sixty Years of It

Knight has been performing publicly since the 1950s, took the Pips through Motown and then Buddah Records, and has spent the last two decades touring as a solo act with a catalog most audiences can sing without prompting. The decision she has described is a schedule decision made by an 82-year-old artist who has been on the road for most of her life.

The next confirmed date is the Florida show. Everything after it, by her husband’s account to TMZ, depends on how that night goes. Knight’s own statement sets no end point at all.
