One month after Hayden Panettiere died at 36, investigators are now examining where drugs connected to the case may have come from. The official cause and manner of death remain unconfirmed, and the Greenville County coroner says toxicology results are still pending.

A New Phase of the Investigation

Entertainment Weekly reported that the investigation now stretches between South Carolina and Los Angeles, with authorities looking at the origin and type of drugs involved. National reports have cited a possible fentanyl-laced oxycodone pill, but local officials have not announced that as the official cause of death.

That distinction is important. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office told Fox Carolina on Monday that it has not released toxicology findings and will issue a formal statement when the investigation is ready.

What Officials Have Confirmed

Panettiere was found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville County on Aug. 16. First responders attempted life-saving measures, and she was pronounced dead at age 36.

The coroner previously said there were no visible injuries or signs of trauma and no preliminary indication of foul play. Greenville Police, the coroner’s office and the Drug Enforcement Administration are involved in the continuing investigation.

The Drug Reports Are Still Reports

The newer coverage has focused heavily on a suspected opioid source and on whether a pill may have contained fentanyl. Those details are being investigated, not treated here as a final medical finding.

The most important confirmed development is that authorities are tracing the drugs while awaiting toxicology. That gives the story a materially different center from the original August coverage of Panettiere’s death.

Panettiere was known to a generation of viewers from “Heroes” and “Nashville” and had spoken publicly about addiction and recovery. That history makes the new reporting especially sensitive, but it also makes precision essential.
