King Charles III hosted a private family dinner at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh on June 30, gathering Queen Camilla, Prince William, Prince Edward, and Princess Anne for what sources described to the Daily Mail as a dine and sleep - dinner followed by an overnight stay at the historic palace. The gathering took place the night before the annual Order of the Thistle ceremony at St. Giles’ Cathedral on July 1.

The timing attracted attention immediately. Prince Harry had been expected to arrive in Britain for a multi-week trip connected to the one-year countdown for the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham, along with other charitable engagements. According to People, Harry and Meghan Markle were planning to bring their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, to the UK for the first time in four years.

A Visit Complicated by Security and Silence

Harry’s planned return had been stalled by an unresolved security dispute. After losing a critical court appeal in May 2025 to have taxpayer-funded police protection reinstated, Harry told the BBC he could not see a world in which he would bring his family to the UK without it. A spokesperson for Harry said he continues to explore every available option to enable the visit to proceed safely.

Buckingham Palace offered Harry accommodation at a royal residence during his planned two-week stay, but by the time the family dinner in Edinburgh took place, the Palace had received no response from the Duke of Sussex, according to reports. The offer was subsequently withdrawn. Royal insiders were described by press reports as weary of the ongoing tension surrounding the Sussexes before the visit had even begun.

The Children and the Question of Access

The most significant unresolved element of the potential visit was whether Archie and Lilibet would meet King Charles during their time in Britain. The children’s last confirmed visit to the UK was for the late Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Reporting in the days before Harry’s arrival suggested he was considering flying the family over for a single day to see the King, rather than a longer stay - a logistics decision that reflected the persistent security uncertainty.

Harry has said publicly that he wants his children to know their grandfather. That stated intention has not translated into an agreed visit, and the royal family’s June 30 dinner - without Harry - underscored where the divisions still stand.

The Court Defeat Adds a New Layer

Harry arrived in London earlier this week, and on Tuesday, July 7, Justice Matthew Nicklin issued a comprehensive ruling dismissing all of his claims against the publisher of the Daily Mail. The lawsuit, which Harry brought alongside Elton John and other prominent claimants, alleged that Associated Newspapers had used unlawful methods to gather private information. The judge found the claimants had not proven their allegations, and the legal costs - estimated at roughly £40 million - now fall to Harry and his co-claimants.

The timing was difficult. Harry was in the country, his accommodation offer from the Palace had already been withdrawn, and his final major tabloid lawsuit had just ended in a complete defeat. The visit that was meant to be focused on charity work and family access had, by the time the ruling landed, taken on a more complicated shape.

The Dinner and What It Did Not Resolve

The Edinburgh family dinner on June 30 was described by royal sources as a routine gathering ahead of the Thistle ceremony. Prince William traveled from Aberdeen, where he had been on a separate engagement, to join his father in Edinburgh. The absence of Harry from the dinner was expected - he was not invited, and the visit at that point remained unconfirmed.

What the dinner did communicate, in the way that royal gatherings communicate things without stating them, was the continued internal alignment of the senior royals and Harry’s continued position outside it. The question of whether his children will spend time with their grandfather during this trip remains open as of July 7, 2026.
