Man Accused of Killing Charlie Kirk Smiles at First In-Person Court Appearance
By Taylor Brooks. Dec 26, 2025
Tyler Robinson, 22, made his first in-person court appearance on December 11, 2025, at the Fourth District Courthouse in Provo, Utah, arriving in a light blue collared shirt and multicolored tie - a departure from the jail jumpsuit he had worn at previous virtual hearings. Despite being shackled at the waist, wrists, and ankles, Robinson whispered with his attorneys and smiled at points during the proceedings. His mother, father, and brother sat behind him; his mother was asked to leave during a closed portion of the hearing and was seen sobbing outside.
The Charges
Robinson faces aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, violent offense in the presence of a child, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering in connection with the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk at a Utah Valley University rally in September 2025. Kirk, founder and president of Turning Point USA, was struck once in the neck by a shot fired from a building approximately 200 yards away. Prosecutors have indicated they will seek the death penalty.
Courtroom Proceedings
Judge Tony Graf presided over the hearing, halting a media livestream after Robinson’s shackles were inadvertently shown - the court had ordered no images of the defendant in restraints or outside of the defense table. Graf warned that future violations could result in termination of the broadcast. The hearing addressed scheduling and preliminary motions. No trial date was set.
