Ohio Surgical Resident Indicted After Allegedly Forcing Abortion Pills
By Cameron Hale. Dec 19, 2025
Hassan-James Abbas, a 32-year-old surgical resident at the University of Toledo Medical Center, was indicted by a Lucas County grand jury on six felony charges in December 2025. Prosecutors allege he crushed abortion pills and attempted to force them into his pregnant girlfriend’s mouth while she was asleep, physically restraining her when she awoke. He was also alleged to have used his estranged wife’s identity to obtain the drugs. Abbas’s medical license was summarily suspended by the State Medical Board of Ohio on November 5, 2025.
The Allegations
According to prosecutors and the Ohio Medical Board’s notice, Abbas’s girlfriend - who was also his patient - disclosed her pregnancy in December 2024. Abbas allegedly pressured her to terminate the pregnancy; when she refused, he ordered the abortion-inducing drugs mifepristone and misoprostol using his estranged wife’s personal information without her knowledge or consent.
Abbas then allegedly crushed the pills and attempted to force the powder into the woman’s mouth while she was asleep. She awoke to find him physically restraining her. She managed to escape and called 911, at which point Abbas allegedly took her phone and ended the call.
Charges and License Suspension
The Lucas County grand jury indicted Abbas on six felony counts: abduction (third-degree), tampering with evidence (third-degree), unlawful distribution of an abortion-inducing drug (fourth-degree), disrupting public services (fourth-degree), identity fraud (fifth-degree), and deception to obtain a dangerous drug (fifth-degree). His arraignment in Lucas County Common Pleas Court was scheduled for December 19, 2025.
The State Medical Board of Ohio cited clear and convincing evidence that his continued practice posed an immediate and serious danger to the public. The University of Toledo Medical Center placed him on administrative leave and stated it was cooperating with the board’s investigation. A medical board hearing to determine whether his license would be permanently revoked was scheduled for May 14-15, 2026.
