Peter Cullen Was the Voice of Optimus Prime for Forty Years

Peter Cullen, the voice actor who played Optimus Prime from the first Transformers cartoon in 1984 through the live-action films, died at his home in Los Angeles at 85. His family and agent confirmed the death in a statement on August 27. “Peter Cullen passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family,” the statement said. A cause has not been disclosed.

Forty Years in One Role

Very few performers hold a single character across four decades and multiple corporate ownerships of the property. Cullen did. He voiced Optimus Prime in the original animated series, in the 1986 animated film, in the later television revivals, and in the Michael Bay live-action films that began in 2007 and turned a toy line into one of the highest-grossing franchises in cinema.

The continuity mattered more than the studios initially understood. When the 2007 film was in casting, the argument for hiring the original voice rather than a contemporary star was made largely by the audience, and Cullen returned.

Eeyore, and the Range Nobody Noticed

The same performer voiced Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh productions, a character built entirely from resignation and delivered at half the volume of anything else in the scene. He was also the Predator in the 1987 film, a performance with almost no words in it.

An actor who can carry a commanding baritone leader, a depressed donkey and a wordless creature is doing three distinct jobs, and the general public credited him with roughly one.

The Voice Came From a Person

Cullen said for years that Optimus Prime was built on his older brother Larry, a Marine who served in Vietnam. The advice, as Cullen recounted it, was to sound heroic without shouting, because real strength does not need volume. That instruction is audible in every line the character has.

It is also why the performance survived the transition from a children’s cartoon to a $1 billion film franchise without becoming camp. The voice was modeled on someone Cullen respected, and it never condescended to the material or to the children listening to it.

What He Leaves

Two generations of adults can quote a character he originated before most of them were born, and a third is meeting it now. The role has been recast before in spinoffs and games, and it will be again. The reason those recastings are always noticed is the forty years of consistency that preceded them.
