There are Open Championships won by names already carved into the trophy’s long list of familiar dynasties, and there are Open Championships where a New Zealander walks off the 18th with a birdie and his country has to reckon with the fact that this has never happened before, and Ryan Fox, who holed the winning putt at The Open Championship on Sunday, is the second kind.

Fox, 36, from Auckland, is the son of Grant Fox, the legendary All Blacks fly-half who played in New Zealand’s 1987 World Cup-winning team. He turned professional in golf in 2011 and spent most of a decade building steadily on the European Tour without arriving at the moment his results suggested might be coming. He arrived at The Open this week and shot his way into the final group on Sunday, then did what walk-off birdie winners do: he hit the shot when he had to hit it, on the hole where it mattered, and he made it.

The field at this year’s Open included Bryson DeChambeau, who argued strenuously with rules officials during the second round and was assessed a two-stroke penalty before the tournament had any use for his name again. It included the home-crowd favorites whose presence on an Open leaderboard generates its own particular atmosphere. It included a long list of players with major championships already. Fox’s major championship list, before Sunday, was empty.

New Zealand is a country that has produced remarkable athletes. Sir Edmund Hillary. Sir Peter Blake. Jonah Lomu. The All Blacks, in rugby, have won three World Cups. In golf, the country had not produced a major champion. It has one now. Fox stood on the 18th green and holed the putt that ended the question, which had not previously needed answering because no New Zealander had been in a position to answer it.
