Sandra Bullock Returns to No. 1 With 'Practical Magic 2'

Sandra Bullock is back at No. 1 with a movie tied to one of her most enduring fan favorites. ‘Practical Magic 2,’ reuniting Bullock with Nicole Kidman nearly 28 years after the original, opened atop the North American box office with an estimated $30 million.

A Sequel Nearly Three Decades in the Making

The original “Practical Magic” arrived in 1998 and eventually became a cult favorite despite a modest initial theatrical run. The sequel brought Bullock and Kidman back as the Owens sisters, now carrying decades of audience familiarity into a new generation of the story.

According to the Associated Press, the film opened in 4,146 theaters and added about $16 million internationally, for a worldwide opening near $46 million.

It Knocked a Blockbuster Out of First Place

The No. 1 finish also ended a six-week run at the top for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” That makes the opening more than a nostalgia footnote: the sequel displaced the dominant movie of the late-summer box office.

For Bullock, who has spent decades moving between romantic comedies, dramas and action films, the result reconnects a familiar role with a current commercial win.

The Audience Came Back for the Pairing

The sequel’s draw is built around the return of Bullock and Kidman together, not simply the title. Their characters and sister dynamic were the emotional center of the first film, and the new release leans directly into that recognition.

That kind of long-gap sequel can fail if nostalgia is the only selling point. Opening at No. 1 gives this one a measurable outcome: enough people showed up in the first weekend to put it ahead of every other movie in North America.

A Familiar Name, a New Result

The next question is whether that opening holds beyond the first weekend. For now, the comeback has a concrete number attached to it.
