The Book of Mormon Celebrates 15 Years on Broadway

The Book of Mormon is celebrating its 15th anniversary on Broadway in
2026, having opened at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on March 24, 2011,
and surpassed 5,500 performances in the process, according to Broadway
News. The production has become the Eugene O'Neill Theatre's
longest-running show and has broken the house box-office record more
than 50 times.

The show is now the 10th-longest-running Broadway production of all time
and the 4th-longest currently playing, behind Chicago, The Lion King,
and Wicked, according to Broadway News. In December 2025, the musical's
5,462nd performance surpassed the original run of Beauty and the Beast,
cementing its place in the top ten of Broadway's all-time list, per
BroadwayWorld.

A Show That Defied Expectations

The Book of Mormon, created by Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Robert
Lopez — the team behind South Park and the song "Lonely Island"
— opened in March 2011 to immediate critical acclaim and commercial
success. It won nine Tony Awards in 2011, including Best Musical, Best
Direction, and Best Original Score. The win for Lopez also contributed
to his eventual EGOT status, as he later became one of a small group of
artists to win Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards.

Industry observers entering the show's original run did not predict a
15-year run for a production centered on satirical comedy. Musical
comedies, as a category, tend to have shorter runs than emotionally
driven dramas or family-friendly spectaculars. The Book of Mormon
proved an exception, sustaining consistent demand across more than a
decade and a half without a production redesign or major cast overhaul.

The Anniversary Celebration

Broadway News reported that the cast and production team marked the
milestone with a new video released to coincide with the 15th
anniversary, featuring cast members sharing favorite lyrics, backstage
memories, and reflections on the show's run. The video circulated
widely among Broadway communities and long-term fans of the production.

The show continues its run at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, where it has
played exclusively since opening night. Playbill's most recent long-run
tallies, updated through early 2026, confirm its standing as one of the
most durable productions in Broadway history — a milestone that places
it in the company of Chicago and The Lion King, shows that have
defined what a modern long-running Broadway production looks like.
