Human Remains Found in Liquid Manure During Search for Irish Farmer Missing

Michael Gaine, a 56-year-old cattle and sheep farmer from County Kerry, Ireland, vanished on March 20, 2025, after a trip into Kenmare Town. His car was found parked at his farm with personal belongings inside but no sign of him. On May 16, nearly two months after his disappearance, what appeared to be human remains were discovered in liquid manure being spread on a field near his farm. The Discovery

During routine slurry spreading on May 16, the operator spotted material believed to be human remains. Ireland’s State Pathologist Dr. Sally Anne Collis and Forensic Anthropologist Laureen Buckley were called to the scene. According to The Irish Times, detectives suspected Gaine’s body had been dismembered and placed in a slurry tank before being spread across the field. The slurry tank in question had been drained and searched earlier in the investigation, raising questions about the timeline of when remains were introduced.

Arrest and Investigation

One day after the remains were found, a man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of murder. Authorities did not publicly name him, though reports indicated the suspect and Gaine knew each other and may have had a personal dispute. The suspect was released without charge on May 20, pending further investigation. The Serious Crime Unit, Irish Defence Forces, and multiple forensic agencies continued to assist with searches of Gaine’s farm and surrounding land.

Michael Kelley, an American man who had been living and working on Gaine’s 1,000-acre farm for approximately three years, publicly confirmed he had been arrested and questioned in connection with the case, though he was released without charge. Authorities did not name him as a formal suspect. Gaine’s wife, Janice, told RTÉ that her husband was her best friend and that “from the beginning, she knew something wasn’t right.”
