Deputies Respond to Stabbings on Augustine Drive
Baldwin County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported assault on Augustine Drive in the Belforest community of Baldwin County, Alabama, just before 9 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, 2026. When deputies arrived, they found a man and a woman suffering from apparent stab wounds in and around the family’s home.
The woman, identified by the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office as 37-year-old Samantha Baker, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband, 46-year-old Lance Baker, was airlifted to a hospital, where he initially remained in critical condition. He has since been listed in stable condition at a Mobile hospital. A 17-year-old male was detained at the scene.
Argument Over Discipline Preceded the Attack
Investigators said the stabbing followed an argument between the teen and his parents over disciplinary actions. According to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, the altercation began inside the home and spread outside, with deputies describing a crime scene that extended across half the block and into several neighboring yards. More than 80 evidence markers were placed at the scene.
Deputies found Lance Baker outside a neighboring home, where he had gone seeking help. “Our male who is still in critical condition but is hopefully going to survive - he was running to houses trying to get some help,” said Capt. Mara Correa of the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, speaking at the scene on July 6.
Teen Locked Himself Inside and Called 911
After the attack, the teen locked himself inside the home and called 911. According to Lt. Andy Ashton of the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, the teen told the dispatcher he had gotten into a dispute with his parents and believed he had stabbed one of them to death. “More or less that he had gotten into a dispute with his parents and believed he had stabbed one to death and was unsure of the other,” Ashton said.
The teen was arrested at the scene and has been charged as an adult with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder, both Class A felonies under Alabama law. A $1 million bond was requested by the Baldwin County District Attorney’s office at the bond hearing on July 7.
Charged as Adult in Baldwin County
Authorities confirmed the suspect is being held at the Baldwin County Corrections Center as an adult. “Murder and attempted murder are both Class A felonies,” Capt. Correa confirmed. “So he was taken into custody as an adult.” The suspect has not been publicly identified by name, consistent with the initial handling of juvenile suspects charged as adults while legal proceedings are in early stages.
The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences is expected to conduct an autopsy to formally confirm the cause of Samantha Baker’s death as the investigation continues. The sheriff’s office has said it is a single-family domestic matter with no known threat to the surrounding Belforest community.
Community Asked to Withhold Social Media Details
In an unusual step, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office directly asked residents and neighbors not to spread information or details through social media while the investigation is active. “We would really ask that people keep the details to themselves for right now. Family members have lost loved ones, and we don’t want information getting out too quickly,” Capt. Correa said in a public statement Monday.
As of July 7, 2026, the suspect remains in custody. The case is being investigated by the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division. No preliminary hearing date has been publicly announced.
