The Chicago Sky Owner Banned Enes Kanter Freedom From the Building

The Ban

Chicago Sky owner Michael Alter announced on Tuesday, August 25 that Enes Kanter Freedom is barred indefinitely from the team’s home arena. The former NBA player “will not be allowed back in the Chicago arena unless sometime in the future, he’s able to prove to us that he’s able to abide by our rules without being a potential threat,” Alter said, adding that Kanter Freedom “has demonstrated to us, unequivocally, that he has the potential to be a threat.”

That is a team owner putting the phrase “potential threat” on the record about a named individual, which is what makes this a consequence rather than an incident.

What Happened on Sunday

Kanter Freedom was ejected in the third quarter of the Sky’s game against the Indiana Fever on Sunday, August 23, following a verbal altercation with Sky guard Natasha Cloud. He approached the court wearing a shirt reading “woman noun. adult human female.”

He attended without an invitation. His ticket was purchased under another name.

His Response

Kanter Freedom says he “didn’t break any rules.” He is threatening to sue, has sent a letter to the WNBA requesting a review and a full ticket refund, and has said he intends to attend Indiana Fever playoff games using his manager’s name.

That last statement is the part that turns a single ejection into an ongoing operational problem. A ban enforced by name is only as good as the name on the ticket, and he has publicly said he will buy tickets under someone else’s.

Cloud Answered on Saturday

Natasha Cloud responded publicly on Saturday, August 29, calling Kanter Freedom “irrelevant” and describing the culture-war framing around the incident as an “intentional distraction” from issues affecting women in the league.

Her framing and his are incompatible in a specific way. He is arguing about access and rules. She is arguing that the argument itself is the point of the exercise.

What Is Actually Unresolved

The WNBA has not said whether it will conduct the review Kanter Freedom requested, and no league-level action has been announced. The arena ban is a team decision made by an owner and enforceable only at the door. The next test of it is a Chicago home date with a ticket bought under a name that is not his.
